What you should definitely know about your electric car!

Everyone knows that an electric car is better for the environment. Just as everyone knows that you need to charge an electric car and that an electric car is attractive because of the tax advantage. But do you know:

  • How much it costs to charge an electric car?
  • What kind of maintenance is required for my electric car?
  • Whether you are allowed to tow an electric vehicle?
  • That the driving range of an electric car can vary?
  • That the speed at which you drive affects the range of your car?

You can read all about it in the article below.

How much does it cost to charge my electric car?

There are three different ways to charge your electric car. Charging at home, a public charge point or you can use a fast charger.

  1. The cheapest way is to choose for home charging. Here you pay on average 0.039 euros per kilometre. A petrol car costs approximately 0.10 euro per kilometre at a litre price of 1.67 euro. A clear difference therefore…
  2. If you choose to charge your electric car publicly, it will be slightly more expensive. Here you have to take into account rates between 0.05 and 0.09 euro per kilometre.
  3. If you want fast charging, you will of course pay even more. Quick charging is on average 0.12 euro per kilometre.

What maintenance do I need for an electric car?

No gearbox, oil filters or timing belts. You have a lot fewer parts than with a fuel car. Nevertheless, there is still maintenance involved with an electric car. Think of your tyres, but also the brake discs of an electric car can rust and will need to be replaced.

Can I tow my electric car?

No, often not. An electric motor is in most cases directly connected to the wheels through gears. There is no clutch in an electric car to put it ‘in gear’, so the entire drive train turns with it during towing. This can cause damage!

My range is different in winter than in summer, why?

The batteries in electric cars perform best between 15 and 25 degrees. Especially in winter, the range of your electric vehicle can be reduced significantly. This is because batteries work less efficiently at low temperatures. In addition, in the winter you also turn on the car’s heating, which again increases consumption.

Does speed affect my range?

Yes, the faster you drive, the faster the battery will run out. The faster you drive, the more air resistance you have. The ideal speed is 110 km/h, which will get you the furthest on the motorway. If you drive in the city, you have to brake more often but this is more favourable for your consumption. This is because the braking energy is not lost by an electric car. This is called regenerative braking; you just reuse this braking energy.
